About us
Our background
We're George and Alice! Here you can learn a bit about how we work, where our areas of focus lie and our backgrounds.
George is a qualified and experienced gardener and artist. He has also gained additional qualifications in permaculture via Patrick Whitefield Associates, and in soil health via The Soil Food Web School.
During his years of working as a gardener in England, he felt drawn to making use of the wasted fruit he saw falling in people's gardens and there began a passion for making cider as well as preserving. Nowadays, it's possible to once again get hold of his craft cider in Sweden (small batches via Systembolaget, and restaurants). Find out more about Norman Cider HERE. The labels are also designed by George (see picture to the right for a label from a Cider batch made in England, and normancider.se for the three current batches).
Alice is a biologist and medical doctor specialised in general practice. She trained in the UK, and has experienced practising in a variety of health care systems including in Nepal, India, Tanzania, Uganda, England and Sweden. This, in combination with her passion for growing food and soil health, has given her a broad perspective on health and well-being and she has developed a special interest in lifestyle medicine and planetary health.
Alice has also taken qualifications in permaculture and completed the year-long The Land Course through Patrick Whitefield Associates, and in soil health via The Soil Food Web School. This has contributed to an interest in the connections between soil health, planetary health and human health, and wants to contribute in making modern science within these fields accessible for more people, as well as making them relevant to every day life.
Alice also has a strong interest in yoga and mindfulness and has completed her teacher training in yoga for adults, as well as yoga adapted for children and teenagers.
From England to Bohuslän via Falkenberg
In 2016, we moved from England to Sweden and we still get lots of inspiration from colleagues and projects in the UK.
The Kitchen Garden started with a kitchen garden in Falkenberg in 2018, designed with inspiration from Permaculture. We wanted to provide a closer experience with the origins of food, and share food growing methods that not only help the grower, but also natural ecosystems and soil health. We offered several ways to take part in the growing space, from memberships to events, workshops and guided tours, as well as a small farm shop with fresh products. 2022 was our last season in Falkenberg, and we now live in Bohuslän.
Our vision is a world where food production works in collaboration with human and planetary health, and at the same time nurtures the health of the soil. Where individuals feel empowered to take ownership of what they consume. And where more and more (all!) people can live in harmony with nature and be a true part of the natural ecosystem.
Our work continues within these focus areas and we hope you find something that interests you!
A couple of films about The Kitchen Garden, from our time in Falkenberg, the first was produced by photographer Linda Tengvall and the second by Falkenbergs Skafferi.
